The new buyer guide explains how to check FSC, BPI and other packaging certifications, helping foodservice buyers identify valid claims before choosing a supplier.

Corncomp Publishes New Guide to Help Buyers Verify Sustainable Food Packaging Certifications

NINGBO, China — Corncomp, a manufacturer of biodegradable food packaging and paper straws, has published a new buyer guide designed to help foodservice companies, distributors and packaging importers verify sustainability certifications before selecting a supplier.

As demand for biodegradable and compostable packaging continues to grow, buyers are being asked to evaluate more than price, appearance and minimum order quantity. Certifications such as FSC and BPI are increasingly part of supplier assessments, particularly for companies sourcing packaging for regulated markets or sustainability-focused foodservice programs.

Corncomp developed the new guide after seeing a common challenge in international sourcing: a certification logo alone does not always tell a buyer whether the certificate is current, whether it applies to the product being purchased, or whether the company named on the document matches the supplier or manufacturing entity involved.

The guide recommends that buyers review several basic points before accepting a sustainability claim.

First, buyers should check the name of the certificate holder and understand its relationship to the manufacturer or supplier. They should also confirm the certification standard, validity period and product scope where that information is available.

For paper-based packaging, FSC certification can help buyers understand whether certified fiber sourcing and Chain of Custody requirements are being addressed. For compostable packaging, third-party certification can provide additional evidence that a particular product or specification has been assessed against recognized compostability requirements.

Corncomp also advises buyers to distinguish between general material descriptions and product-specific certification.

A material such as PLA, CPLA or paper may be commonly associated with sustainable packaging, but the material name alone does not automatically confirm that every finished product made from it carries the same certification.

“Buyers should look beyond the logo and ask what the certification actually covers,” the company said. “The most useful question is not simply whether a supplier has a certificate, but whether the documentation is relevant to the product and specification being ordered.”

Corncomp currently manufactures paper straws, paper bowls, food containers, cups and other foodservice packaging from its manufacturing base in Ningbo, China. The company works with international buyers on wholesale, custom printing and OEM/ODM packaging projects.

Its certification and compliance informationincludes FSC Chain of Custody, BPI-certified compostable product options, ISO 9001 and BRCGS-related manufacturing and quality credentials. Corncomp's certification information is summarized on its website so buyers can better understand the relationship between different products, materials and compliance requirements.

The company says the new guide is intended as a practical sourcing resource rather than a substitute for buyers' own regulatory or compliance review.

Packaging requirements can differ by product, application and destination market. Corncomp therefore recommends that importers and foodservice buyers request documentation that applies to the exact packaging specification being purchased, particularly when compostability or certified fiber sourcing is part of the purchasing requirement.
