Independent Hip-Hop Scene Gains New Voice as BOSSMVN Drops Debut Mixtape

BOSSMVN releases debut mixtape 'Might Revisit Later' under his own label, MVN Sound, blending introspective lyricism with melodic rap. The project explores themes of heartbreak, growth, and ambition, and is available on major streaming platforms.

LOS ANGELES — In an era where the music industry is increasingly dominated by major-label polish and algorithmic playlists, independent artists are carving out spaces for raw, unfiltered expression. Amid this shifting landscape, BOSSMVN, an emerging voice from Atlanta now based in Los Angeles, has released his debut mixtape, "Might Revisit Later," under his own label, MVN Sound. The nine-track project, with a runtime of approximately 23 minutes, is now available on major streaming platforms.

The mixtape explores themes of heartbreak, personal growth, self-belief, and ambition, according to a press release. Tracks include "98 DAYS," "SWEETER THAN HONEY," "JEALOUS OF WHAT?," "SOMEONE ELSE," "WALKING ON EGGSHELLS," "MY VISION NOW," "ONE MORE TIME," "WE JUST STARTED," and "FLOW STATE."

BOSSMVN said in a statement that his priority was to create an honest project. "I didn't want to sound like someone else's version of success," he said. "I wanted people to hear where I am right now, even if it's imperfect."

The mixtape is the first release from MVN Sound, an independent creative identity founded by BOSSMVN. The artist, who blends introspective lyricism with melodic rap and cinematic production, cites influences from modern hip-hop and atmospheric R&B.

"Might Revisit Later" is available for streaming on platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

BOSSMVN, whose real name is Marcus Vaughn, began writing music in 2019 as a way to process personal experiences. Growing up in Atlanta, he was exposed to a diverse range of sounds, from trap to soul, which later shaped his eclectic style. After years of refining his craft and performing at local open mics, he decided to independently release his debut project to maintain full creative control.

The mixtape's title, "Might Revisit Later," reflects BOSSMVN's approach to revisiting past emotions and memories, but with a forward-looking perspective. Each track serves as a chapter in his journey, capturing raw moments of vulnerability and resilience. The opening track, "98 DAYS," is a reflective piece about a relationship that lasted just over three months, while "FLOW STATE" delves into the mental clarity he finds when creating music.

Production on the mixtape was handled by a mix of up-and-coming producers, including frequent collaborator DJ Kairo and beatmaker Lofi Lucas. The project was recorded in a home studio in Los Angeles, where BOSSMVN moved in 2021 to pursue his music career. The DIY approach allowed him to experiment with sounds without external pressure, resulting in a cohesive yet diverse body of work.

Since its release, "Might Revisit Later" has garnered attention from independent music blogs and playlists, with early listeners praising its authenticity and emotional depth. BOSSMVN plans to support the mixtape with a series of live performances in Los Angeles and hopes to embark on a small tour in 2024. He is already working on new material, aiming to build on the foundation laid by this debut.

For fans of artists like J. Cole, Frank Ocean, and Kid Cudi, BOSSMVN's music offers a fresh perspective that is both personal and relatable. With "Might Revisit Later," he establishes himself as an artist to watch in the independent music scene.
